I remember vividly the first astrology chart I ever interpreted-that incredible moment when the myriad of details coalesced and the person stood revealed. That was 35 years and 1000's of charts in the past, but I still experience that magical moment with every chart that I do.
At the time, I was 23 and living on an island in the middle of Lake Champlain (VT). I had stumbled upon an astrology book in a small bookstore and was determined to learn this fascinating art. Alas, island living in the 1970's was not conducive to finding teachers and colleagues, so I purchased a few books and set about teaching myself. I spent hours casting charts by hand. I dusted off my rusty math skills, mentally apologized to my high school math teacher for declaring logarithms useless, and cast and interpreted charts for everyone I knew. I tested theories, discarded some and embraced others.
My progress was slow
I moved to Virginia and for the first time belonged to a community of astrologers with access to classes and workshops. I taught and in turn was taught. My early isolation gave me a deep appreciation for the teachers, guides, companions and mentors who entered my life.
Over the years, jobs (high school, kindergarten and community college teacher; newspaper editor; job coach; administrative assistant; manager in a community mental health agency), relationships, hobbies and friends have come and gone. But astrology has remained a constant passion. Through it, I was inspired to explore healing modalities, numerology, feng shui and a deep commitment to my spiritual path.
